Can we stop this? MUBI University Killings
London- University education in Nigeria has changed through period when it was a luxury to commodity readily available to almost everyone. In Time past, it strongly stood for status symbolism, means of employment or professional progression, and a sure way to succeed in the Future.
As at 1948, there was only one University College in Nigeria, which was established in response to nationalist agitations. Today, there are 117 operating universities. In terms
of ownership, the Federal Government owns 36; State governments 36; and Private
organizations and individuals 45.
Besides, the National Universities Commission (NUC), which has the duty and responsibility of providing quality control oversight, has also blacklisted 45 illegal/unlicensed private universities in the country.
Today also, there are hundreds of thousands of students taking different undergraduate courses in these universities. But beneath the geometric growths in the number of students and staff (in spite of brain drain, people moving abroad to study), and the universities in Nigeria, are socio-cultural, political, and economic changes that define the quality of social relationships in these institutions of learning.
What can the Government do to protect harmless University students from both internal and external aggressions?
How about introducing Surveillance Cameras powered by Solar Energy ( since we do not have constant electricity) into the campuses and surrounding Areas.
Metal Detectors at the University gates with scanners.( since recent events has prompted the need for excessive security.
Armed security men, from the Army as well as the Police, Joined by University Security also equally Armed with Guns capable of resisting external attacks from groups like the BOKO HARAM....
